The Elizabeth Fry Society operates Amber House, a 17 bed transition house, in Prince George for women and children who need safety. Our facility is in high demand, housing over 550 women and children every year, and turning away over 500 more women and children, due to lack of space or specialized services.

A need for safety, security, and compassion for women and children who are seeking refuge from violence in transition houses is a well known phenomenon, locally and nationally. As much as transition houses are under-funded for the amazing work that they do, we in Canada have a wealth of resources compared to other countries that have little to no resources and who experience even a greater severity of violence to women and children.
In seeking to support a country whereby women and children are greatly at risk and have few services, the Elizabeth Fry Society, and the Adopt a Shelter campaign, has decided to adopt an organization in India. Jagruti Seva Sanstha is currently in the process of building a safe haven with a few beds allocated to women and children needing a safe place to stay.

It is our dream that eventually, we might be able to raise enough funds to support this organization in developing the first ever stand alone women and children’s transition house for victims of violence in India. We believe that our fundraising program can bring into focus the need for shelters both locally and globally, shining a light on the need to stop gender-based violence around the world.
